Shoes Off!!!
It is very important to take off your shoes after stepping in the door and greeting the host/hostess. Russians never walk around their apartments in their shoes. They wear house shoes or slippers inside their homes. This helps keep their homes cleaner. Many people don’t' have the modern conveniences of the West such as vacuum-cleaners. All the cleaning is done with the brooms and mops. When the Russian invites you into their home, greets you, and asks you to take off your shoes, this also symbolizes you're welcome to stay a while and visit.
Over the doorway No!
Don't ever pass anything over the threshold unless you are angry with someone. All the business should happen on the one side or on the other side of the doorway. This does not include speech. You may speak over the threshold of any doorway.
Making a Smashing PRESENTation
Gift giving is big in the Russian culture. When you're invited to a person's house for a meal or a visit take them a small gift. Don't expect a Russian to thank you repeatedly for your gift. Russians don't usually make a big deal of gifts in front of the giver. Later, when you are gone, they will rave to their friends about what they received from you.
Sshh!! Watch your voice!
In Russia there are two types of voices: inside voice and outside voice. The way we speak in our libraries is the Russian outside voice. Inside the home there is more freedom to laugh and carry on. The home is where the relationships happen.
Under Communism the streets were a dangerous place. No one could be trusted on the streets for fear he/she might be an informant to the KGB. This is the reason for quietness because almost every citizen lives in an apartment.
Will you be fast? or Will you be dead?
The Russian federation has the law permitting the pedestrians the right of way. There is, however, another law in effect. It is the law of reality. This law runs on the principle - "the bigger has the right of way". What is bigger, you or can? People get hit by cars in Russia while trying to cross the street. BE VERY CAREFUL, when crossing the street. Keep this phrase in mind when walking the streets: there are two types of people on the streets in Russia: fast ones and dead ones.
